The Sorting Process

The Ultimate Sorter Model 4 uses a system of interchangeable sorting trays to separate cases primarily by diameter.

Step 1: Standard Sorting Tray

• Start with the "Standard" sorting tray: Cases are scooped into the perforated hopper.
• Most rimfire, 25ACP, dust, and small debris fall through into the trash bag/bin.
• The cases then flow down to the sorting tray by vibration.

Bins after Standard Sort:

• Bin 1: Collects 9MM and smaller diameter cases.
• Bin 2: Collects 38SPL/357Mag, 40S&W, and similar diameter cases.
• Bin 3: Collects all larger cases.

Tips for Optimal Sorting:

• Continuously feed the hopper at a steady throughput rate.
• Rake the cases around the hopper to allow most of the 22s and debris to fall through.

Step 2: Additional Sorting by Caliber

After the standard sort, change to the appropriate sorting trays for further refinement.

380/9MM Sorting Tray:

• Process the output of Bin 1 from the standard sort.
  • Bin 1: Collects 380, 223/5.56, and other smaller cases.
  • Bin 3: Collects 9MM.

38/40 Sorting Tray:

• Process the output of Bin 2 from the standard sort.
  • This tray separates rimmed cases from rimless cases.
  • Bin 2: Contains 38SPL, 357Mag.
  • Bin 3: Contains 40S&W.

44/45 Sorting Tray:

• Process the output of Bin 3 from the standard sort.
  • Bin 1: Contains 45ACP.
  • Bin 2: Contains 44 Mag, 44 Spl, and 45 Long Colt.
  • Bin 3: Contains all larger cases.

Note: Calibers not specifically listed will sort with other cases of the same diameter.

Suggestions & Comments

• Accuracy: Running a batch through a tray once generally achieves a sorting accuracy of over 99%. However, due to the large volume being processed, some smaller cases might end up in the wrong bin.

• Next, run Bin 2 through a second pass for further accuracy.

• After completing the standard sort, run Bin 3 through a second pass with the Standard tray.

• Keep Boxes Handy: Have small boxes near the hopper to pluck out large rifle cases, shotgun wads, and other large debris.

• Nesting Issues: Nesting is unavoidable, but a second pass will help separate nested cases. Raking cases in the hopper helps minimize the number of 22s nesting inside larger cases.

• Adjust for Efficiency: Experience will guide the ideal feeding and flow for different combinations of cases. Small adjustments might be necessary for the most effective sorting.
